Hi, I’m Mariah:
Anthropologist, Artist, Advocate.
A born-and-raised Detroiter with a poet’s heart and an anthropologist’s eye.
I’ve always believed in the power of a well-told story—whether it's a rap verse written at 13, a poem published in an anthology, or a research paper on Black women’s artistry. My work, in all its forms, is about giving voice to the stories that shape us, especially those too often left on the margins.
With a B.A. from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in progress at Wayne State, I bridge the academy and the community. I’ve opened for legends like Dr. Angela Davis, won national talent competitions with my sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and helped spark campus-wide conversations on mental health.
But here’s the real thesis: Anthropology isn't just for textbooks. It’s a lens for your life. Creative expression isn't just a hobby. It’s a tool for liberation. When we combine them, we don't just get smarter—we get freer, more connected, and more authentically ourselves.
This site is my offering: a mix of PhD survival tools, creative sparks, and honest talk. It’s for anyone who believes that knowing yourself is the first step to building a happier, more peaceful world. Welcome!
